TO BIMA

~ Marjorie Holmes tribute ~

  • Excellent job by To Bima.

  • My album in salute

  • Interesting reference to my mother's work on the Bosketto Durrell garden.

  • They must have independently researched mum's online notes on the ill-fated enterprise.

  • English edition

I symbolically place the article on her favourite pillow-prop that she used for writing her book reviews in her last days.

These photos of her toiling on the Bosketto bring it all back.

  • There she is, just getting on with things.

  • Self-sufficient, no need for an audience, or praise.

  • Always ready to pause to answer questions

  • A tedious job that most would have delegated ... like her endless weeding, which is why San Luca looked the beauty it was.

This was where she was working when the polite anonymous gent was observing her. The notes are quite funny: He didnt reveal who he was or that he knew the municipality's intention from the start was to plant costly identikit shrubs and get rid of anything in their place.

I was there. It was literally one day maman doing her thing, the next, the beds were bare.

  • A touching picture in hindsight. All that effort for naught.

Supportive comments ~ I'd forgotten - or never read - the supportive feedback at the time.

Goodness, fierce stuff, feelings running high.

  • Personal ~ a charming recollection by a long-time visitor to San Luca.

A perfect complement to The Times' obituary by Bishop Geoffrey.

I must consult my brother over the wording of a note to the editor assuring readers that maman never contemplated splitting or selling her collection of originals.

  • Nor can we guess at their monetary value. Anyway, why do people keep going on about this?

  • The drawings are where they've always been, in big plastic bags in the de-humidified walk-thru dresser.

  • They're kept flat, don't take up much space, nor are they in the way.

  • No reason to move them.

Anyway, to whom entrust them who'll be more suitable than simply keeping them here in the Corfu family home where they were executed?

Jim Potts reminded me of Digging by Seamus Heaney - his parent digging, he writing.
'...Between my finger and my thumb The squat pen rests. I'll dig with it.'
